Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar feels the pressure is on the 25-year-old batsman. He believes that Abhishek is trying too hard to hit big shots from the first ball instead of settling down. “Abhishek Sharma is a nice guy but he seems weighed down by expectations. Had he started well against USA, it would have been different. Now the pressure of a big six hitter and a top batsman is showing,” Gavaskar said.“With his shooting range, he needs to spend time in the middle. He can’t try to hit a boundary or a six on the first ball of his innings. If the big shots come, fine. But he shouldn’t force himself to play big shots over the line,” he added.He also advised Abhishek to start slowly and build his innings. “Take a single and get off the mark. It doesn’t even matter four balls. He can make up for it later. He needs to play smart. Spend an hour or two settling down and then play his natural game. Just get off the mark first. Every batsman wants the first run. Once he gets that, everything falls into place,” he added.Assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate also backed Abhishek and said that he has shown good form in training after recovering from illness. He said that Abhishek has been batting well in the nets and should be fine in the next phase.With India reaching the Super 8s, the team hopes that Abhishek will regain his confidence and perform when it matters most.
