Wildlife Interpretation Center (WIC) and Science Park, a project under Shivamogga Smart City, was inaugurated at Mahatma Gandhi Park in the city on Friday.

SN Channabasappa, Shivamogga MLA, inaugurated the park in the presence of Shivamogga City Corporation officers. The WIC and Science Park were built to enable the general public to appreciate and explore forests, wildlife, biodiversity and science concepts, said a brochure released on the occasion.

In the vestibule, visitors were greeted by a diorama of a tigress with cubs. The first room has visual exhibits and panels representing the biodiversity and geographical orientation of the Western Ghats. Another room displays the cultural heritage of Karnataka, especially Shivamogga. The third room gives visitors the experience of walking through the woods. The fifth room was designed to educate citizens about sustainability and the need to address global issues, including climate change, dwindling resources and pollution.

The MLA, Channabasappa, said the center was designed to educate the public, especially school children, about wild animals. “The park has many attractions for visitors. I would like the city residents to visit the place as well,” he said.

Tushar B. Hosur, Deputy Commissioner, Corporation, Priya P., Executive Engineer, and Lakshmi L., AEE (Civil) were present.
