Hillary Clinton praises Mumbai Climate Week
She hailed the Mumbai Climate Week as a significant milestone and expressed her belief in its ability to spur broader systemic change. Clinton highlighted effective grassroots development as evidence of scalable progress, citing an insurance initiative that successfully protected 500,000 previously uninsured women.
“I am sure that bringing everyone together for this first inaugural climate meeting here in Mumbai is the beginning of the change that needs to happen,” she noted.
“This insurance product that I mentioned to you, now 500,000 policyholders, women who have never had insurance for anything. So it’s not just a good thing, it’s smart. It’s a new market,” she added.
She also advocated for enhanced cooperation between the public, private and charitable sectors in order to accelerate structural transformation. Discussing the impact of philanthropy during this era of massive intergenerational wealth transformation, Clinton supported a shift away from conventional aid to address the underlying injustices that have led to the climate emergency. She emphasized that philanthropic efforts must simultaneously alleviate the current hardships while eliminating their root causes.
“We have to be creative in how we bring the public, private and philanthropic sectors together. So I couldn’t be more excited, I guess you could say I’m here with all of you representing the Clinton Global Initiative because we’re looking for partners who want to do hard things and make a difference. And then when we see results, let’s scale them,” Clinton said.
“It’s one of the most fundamental economic justice issues of our time, and it’s built on the very extractive systems that are accelerating the climate crisis right now… philanthropy really needs to address the systemic challenge now, which is to fundamentally redistribute the source of power, wealth and responsibility to those who need it most,” she noted.
