Chasing a modest 105, the Australian openers wasted little time. Setting the tone in the over hole, Marsh cut through Bilal Shafiq at square leg before driving through the covers to pull another boundary through the leg side.
A powerful outside edge that flew past the slip cordon summed up Australia’s intent as they raced forward. In the second round, Oman captain Jatinder Singh turned to Jay Odedra, who fired outside the corkscrew, but Marsh advanced down the track and fired it straight through the screen.
Head joined the attack and hit the ground with confidence as Australia cruised to 28 for no loss after two overs. Left-arm seamer Shakeel stepped on the brakes briefly, conceding just two runs and denying Marsh space to free his hands.
The respite was short-lived. Marsh flicked Shafiq over deep backward square leg for his second six, eliciting a smile from his opening partner before taking on Shakeel again. Australia brought up their fifty in just 4.1 overs, with Head smashing point to keep the momentum intact.
The target was never in doubt as Marsh and Head completed the chase without losing a wicket to seal a crushing win and close a disappointing campaign on a high.
Earlier, Australia’s bowlers produced a commanding bowling performance to dismiss Oman for 104 in 16.2 overs in their final group match on Friday. Pacer Xavier Bartlett (2/27) and leg-spinner Adam Zampa (4/21) did the most damage after skipper Mitchell Marsh won the toss and opted to field.
Wasim Ali top-scored for Oman with 32. Bartlett stepped up immediately and struck with the first ball of the match as he shaped a length delivery back to Kaleem’s stumps.
The pitch, which was under cover due to rain, offered movement and carry and the Aussie seamen extracted enough help to keep Oman under pressure despite Glenn Maxwell dropping a catch at slip.
Oman tried to counter-attack on the power play through Karan Sonavale and Jatinder Singh, but goals fell at regular intervals. Nathan Ellis removed Sonavale with a hard length delivery while Marcus Stoinis stepped in to ensure there was no momentum shift.
Oman were 47 for 3 after six overs and struggled to build partnerships thereafter. Žampa, who was quiet earlier in the tournament, found his rhythm. His quicker deliveries slipped and repeatedly disturbed the stumps as Oman folded the middle and lower order.
He finished with four wickets, including two in consecutive deliveries, as Oman failed to clear their quota. Apart from Wasim Ali’s 32, there was little resistance. The Aussie bowlers remained disciplined throughout to keep the straight chase going and bow out on a winning note.
