Kerala government’s alcohol policy is dangerous, says Archbishop Mar Andrews Thazhath

February 20, 2026

Mar Andrews Thazhath, Archbishop of Thrissur Archdiocese, criticized the state government’s liquor policy, terming it harmful to the social environment as it allegedly increases the availability and consumption of alcohol in the state.

He was speaking while presiding over a meeting of Archdiocese Jagratha Samithi in Thrissur on Thursday.

According to him, the change in attitude of the political and administrative leadership, which had already promised in its program statement to take gradual and strict steps to reduce alcohol consumption and its availability, is surprising. The government’s decision to extend the bar’s opening hours would adversely affect the peace and harmony of families, he noted, urging the authorities to reconsider and withdraw the move.
