Two accused of robbery and shooting arrested

Vijayapur police have arrested two persons accused of armed robbery and shooting at a man in Halasangi village.

A team of officers led by Additional Superintendent of Police Ramanagouda Hatti tracked down and arrested Hanamant Mallappa Waghole (28) and Shivaraj alias Gaudappa Rausaheb Navi (28), both residents of Pune in Maharashtra.

Investigators have recovered 205 grams of gold ornaments and 1 kg of silver ornaments worth approximately ₹22,00,000, three home-made pistols (including the one used during the crime in Vijayapura district), 26 live rounds, an air gun, a bicycle, masks, jacket, helmet, gloves and other materials used in the crime.

Laxman Nimbargi, superintendent of police, told reporters in Vijayapur on February 19 that the two people entered the village and robbed the Bhoomika jewelery shop on January 26. The owner, Maharudra Kanchagar, complained that gold and silver ornaments worth around ₹22,000,000 were robbed The accused hid their identity by covering their faces with black cloth and wearing helmets. They arrived on a black motorcycle and fired at an innocent bystander and the crowd, injuring some.

A case was registered at Zalaki police station under Section 311 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and Sections 25 and 27 of the Arms Act, 1959.

The Superintendent of Police thanked and congratulated the members of the two teams formed for the purpose. They included Sadashiv Kattimani and Sunil Kamble, Deputy Superintendents of Police, Parashuram Mangooli, CPI, Manjunath Tirakannavar, Somesh Gejji and Rakesh Bagali, Sub-Inspectors of Police and other crime and technical staff.

“With sustained efforts, technical expertise and effective investigative skills, the investigation teams managed to track down and arrest the accused within just 20 days of the incident. In recognition of their commendable work, each police officer and employee of the investigation team was awarded an individual certificate of commendation,” the police inspector said.
