A comprehensive assessment will be carried out by Cricket Australia after the national team failed to progress from the group stage of this year’s T20 World Cup. The “forensic review” decision was confirmed immediately after the team’s early exit from the competition.
Australia, who secured the title in 2021, did not advance to the Super Eights for the first time since 2009. Losses against Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe proved decisive, ultimately sealing their elimination and raising questions about preparation and adaptability throughout this campaign.
Key injuries significantly affected Australia’s performance. The team was missing fast bowlers Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewoodas well as all-rounder Mitchell Marsh, who missed the first two games of the campaign.
The campaign was also without veteran Mitchell Starc, who retired from T20 internationals ahead of the event. His departure further changed the balance of the bowling attack and forced the selectors to make adjustments to the original team.
Selector Tony Dodemaide said a full review would be carried out only after the players return from the tournament.
“It’s really disappointing how the tournament has turned out,” Dodemaide said, according to cricket.com.au.
“But we’ll need some time and take some time to finish our last commitment – it’s important we finish well against Oman on Friday – then we’ll come back and analyze it fully.”
‘YOU WANT TO WIN EVERY WORLD CUP’
Dodemaide said Australia’s ambition was to win every single World Cup they entered and said they would be looking to do well next year. The Aussie selector said the plans for the 2027 World Cup and the 2028 T20 World Cup will be set after the review is complete.
“We want to win every World Cup, no matter where it is. Obviously the next one is at home. We would like to do well at home. We have a 48-hour commitment against Oman and we want to finish really well,” said Dodemaide.
“We will do the necessary planning to look at 2028; in the meantime we have the 2027 50-over World Cup. All these things will be mapped out when we get the time and space and we can cut the emotion out of it and look at it more forensically.”
Australia will host the T20 World Cup with New Zealand in 2028, increasing the importance of addressing current shortcomings and improving the team’s performance ahead of future tournaments.
