The use of helium to inflate balloons is prohibited in Mysore

February 19, 2026

The Mysuru City Police has banned the use of helium gas for filling balloons and for other purposes in public places.

City Police Commissioner Seem Latkar’s order banning the use of helium gas to fill balloons or any other objects in public places under the jurisdiction of the Mysuru City Police Commissionerate, issued on Wednesday, comes in the wake of the recent explosion near the Mysuru Palace that claimed three lives.

A police statement said the use of helium gas to inflate balloons poses a serious danger to public life and property. Helium cylinders, which contain highly compressed gas, are often stored using unregulated methods. Careless handling or mishandling of these bottles can lead to fire hazards, suffocation hazards, apart from panic and unrest among the public, police said.

“The use of helium gas at festivals, fairs, tourist sites, public gatherings and crowded places may adversely affect public safety and may lead to serious and unpredictable accidents if continued,” the police said, while banning balloon vendors, event organizers, traders and the public from storing, transporting, selling or using helium gas in public places without complying with prescribed safety standards.

The orders were issued by the city police commissioner pursuant to Section 152 of the BNSS 2023.

“Appropriate legal action will be taken against anyone who violates this order. All commissioned officers are instructed to strictly enforce this order,” the city police commissioner said, adding that the order comes into effect from February 18.
