The Orthodox Church criticizes the Kerala government. the decision to extend the operating hours of bars

February 18, 2026

The Malankara Orthodox Syriac Church on Wednesday strongly rejected the Kerala government’s decision to extend the opening hours of bars in the state, claiming that the move would destroy an entire generation.

Biju Oommen, secretary of the Church Association, said people were worried about the move, which “ensures a continuous supply of alcohol”.

“The government should make it clear if they want young people to sleep in a bar,” Mr Oommen told reporters. He accused the government of selling out the generation to protect the interests of bar owners in the state. “Is this the only way for you to fill the coffers? Is the interest of bar owners more valuable than the tears of mothers in the state?”

Govt. order

The scathing attack by a prominent church denomination comes a day after the government issued an order to extend the opening hours of bars and pubs by two hours. Bars and pubs will be able to operate from 10 a.m. to 12 a.m. according to the order.

In addition, the government has decided to grant permission to bar hotels with FL3 license with 5-star classification and above to operate till 3 am, allowing an additional three hours after the permitted closing time, on payment of an annual rent of ₹5,000.
