The petition, initiated by former Australia captain Greg Chappell, has been presented to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, according to The Age. Among the signatories were Indian greats Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev, along with Australia’s Allan Border, Steve Waugh, Ian Chappell, Belinda Clarke and Kim Hughes; England’s Mike Atherton, Nasser Hussain, Mike Brearley and David Gower; West Indies legend Clive Lloyd; and New Zealander John Wright. In the letter, the former captains expressed “deep concern” over reports of Khan’s deteriorating health, particularly a marked deterioration in his eyesight during his incarceration in Rawalpindi’s Adiala jail, where he was held for more than two years on corruption charges. They emphasized that someone of his stature deserves humane treatment, medical care from professionals of his choice, regular access to family and a fair trial without delay. The appeal underlined cricket’s long-standing role in fostering respect beyond rivalry and called on the authorities to uphold the principles of decency and fairness. Describing the situation as “terrible”, Gavaskar noted their long-standing friendship that preceded their on-field contests.Supporters say Khan has lost 85 percent of the vision in his right eye and has limited access to family and personal doctors. He and his wife Bushra Bibi have been jailed since August 2023, and his recent convictions equate to a combined 31-year sentence.
