After losing to Sri Lanka, Australia relied on Ireland’s win over Zimbabwe to keep their T20 World Cup campaign alive. However, rain had the final say on Tuesday 17 February when the clash between Ireland and Zimbabwe at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium was washed out, resulting in Australia’s elimination from the tournament. The abandoned match also confirmed Zimbabwe’s progress to the Super 8 stage.
Ireland vs. Zimbabwe T20 World Cup highlights
It is the first time Australia have failed to progress past the opening round of the Under-20 Men’s World Cup. Their final group game against Oman is now meaningless and all that remains to be done is for pride. Zimbabwe, who failed to qualify for the 2024 FIFA T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the United States, staged a remarkable comeback by securing a place in the Super 8 stage.
Sikandar Raza’s Zimbabwe now have an opportunity to finish Group B at the top of the table when they take on co-hosts Sri Lanka at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Thursday, February 19.
