Brick kilns in Tripura are facing closure due to shortage of coal, an official of Kiln Owners’ Association said on Monday (Feb 16, 2026). The problem has worsened over the past two weeks.
Most of the brick kilns have already stopped production and some had only seven to eight days of fuel supply, said Tripura Brick Kilns Association president Vivekanandanda Choudhury. Some furnaces are out of coal stock, Mr. Choudhary said.
Tripura has approximately 300 brick kilns, of which 20 are non-functional due to various reasons. The rest are operational but facing problems due to shortage of coal from Meghalaya.
In addition, furnaces face financial losses with a widening gap between income and expenditure. Hundreds of workers from other states including Jharkhand, Bihar, West Bengal and Assam work in Tripura’s furnaces.
