Colonel AM Gnanakan, who retired after a distinguished career in the Indian Army, died in Belagavi on Monday. He was 87.
Born in 1938, Colonel Gnanakan was an officer in the 14 Grenadiers. He led his battalion with courage and conviction during the wars of 1962, 1965 and 1971.
He served in sensitive and challenging areas including NEFA and Jammu and Kashmir.
After retiring from active service, Colonel Gnanakan settled in Belagavi. He went on to lead several organizations.
For the past 25 years, he has led St Mary’s Church and played a key role in strengthening its spiritual and community life.
He also spearheaded the recent renovation of the historic church building, a major restoration carried out after 165 years that ensures its legacy lives on for generations to come.
He also served as Resident Director (North Karnataka and Kolhapur Region) Bombay Diocesan Trust Association Pvt. Ltd., the statement said.
