Rajamahendravaram Member of Parliament D. Purandeswari on Monday announced that the Department of Housing and Urban Affairs has sanctioned ₹135 crore for a drinking water project in Rajamahendravaram town under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation 2.0 (AMRUT).

The five-year scheme will expire in the financial year 2025–2026. Access to safe drinking water and wastewater management remain major challenges for Rajamahendravaram. The source points from where water is drawn from the Godavari River for purification have come under scrutiny in the past few years as they are located downstream from the Andhra Cemetery and Paper Mill, from where sewage and effluents are discharged into the river.

On Monday, Ms. Purandeswari and Rajamahendravaram City MLA Adireddy Srinivas reviewed the ongoing projects including the drinking water project. The duo also discussed the proposed sports infrastructure facilities for which ₹13.76 crore has been sanctioned under India’s Khelo programme. Later, the tobacco farmers thanked Ms. Purandeswari for the Center exempting unbranded tobacco from stamp duty with effect from February.
