Strong wind, clouds bring a brief respite to Delhi; orange warning for thunderstorms | Today’s news
Residents across the capital experienced a sudden change in weather on Sunday as strong winds swept through the area. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert and warned of thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds in the region during the next few hours.
The Met Office issued a district advisory at 4:10 p.m. warning of moderate thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds of 41-61 km/h. The nowcast valid till 7:10 PM covered several parts of Delhi.
Rainfall will intensify in North India
The IMD has predicted isolated to scattered rainfall over Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and Punjab between June 27 and July 2. Similar weather conditions are expected in West Uttar Pradesh from June 29 to July 3, East Uttar Pradesh from June 27 to June 30 and both East and West Rajasthan from June 27 to July 3.
Rain is likely to spread over Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and Punjab on July 3. East Uttar Pradesh is also expected to receive rain between July 1 and 3.

Thunderstorms, gusty winds and heat warnings
According to the IMD, isolated thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 40-50 kmph with gusts reaching up to 60 kmph are likely to occur over Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and Punjab from July 1-3.
The department has issued a similar forecast for West Uttar Pradesh between 30 June and 3 July, as well as for East Uttar Pradesh and East Rajasthan from 27 June to 3 July. West Rajasthan is expected to experience gusty winds of 30-40 kmph during the same period, with gusts up to 50 kmph.

Meanwhile, isolated areas of Bihar and Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi are likely to remain in heatwave conditions on June 27 and 28.
East Uttar Pradesh is expected to experience a heat wave from June 27 to 30, with severe heat predicted on June 27 and 28. West Uttar Pradesh is also likely to witness heatwave conditions between June 27 and 29, with isolated areas expected to face severe heat waves on June 27 and 28.
The change in weather comes after the national capital experienced much more intense heat than the actual temperature suggested on Saturday, with the heat index or “feel” temperature soaring to 48.4C, while the maximum temperature reached 41.3C.
The Safdarjung weather station, the city’s main observatory, recorded a minimum temperature of 30.8 degrees Celsius. That was 2.9 degrees above the seasonal average and 2.1 degrees above the previous day’s low.
According to a forecast reported by Hindustan Times, Delhi is expected to be lashed by rain accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds from Monday to Friday.

“There is a possibility of very light to light rain in the coming days, the weather conditions will intensify on Tuesday and Wednesday, when a yellow alert has been issued,” an IMD official said, adding, “On Sunday, partly clear skies are expected with the possibility of thunderstorms developing in the afternoon or evening. Strong surface winds of 20-30 kmph are also expected, isolated gusts of up to 40 km/h.”
According to the IMD forecast, the maximum temperature is expected to remain between 39°C and 41°C on Sunday before dropping to 35°C-37°C by Wednesday. At the same time, the minimum temperatures on Sunday will probably remain in the range of 28 to 30 °C.
