Govt. University doctors will go on indefinite strike from Monday

February 16, 2026

The Kerala State Medical College Teachers’ Association (KGMCTA) will go on an indefinite strike from Monday, which will include a long-term boycott of outpatient (OP) clinical services as well as all academic activities. Starting February 19, doctors will boycott non-urgent operations and other elective procedures indefinitely.

In a statement on Sunday, the KGMCTA said that though it has been protesting since July 1, the state government has not fulfilled any of the promises it made on various demands made over the years. The demands raised include ending deferment of salary revision arrears of doctors in medical colleges despite full payment of salary revision arrears to government employees, rectification of irregularities in the salary revision order, revision of pension ceiling in central rates, creation of sufficient number of seats in medical colleges and payment of DA arrears.

Following previous strike calls, the association met with Health Minister Veena George after which the entry-level pay shortfall was partially resolved. However, no action has been taken to pay the salary revision arrears affecting a large majority of doctors, the statement said.

From February 26, the faculty will boycott university examination duties and related duties.

KGMCTA said it has exempted casualty (emergency services), delivery room, ICU, inpatient service and post-mortem from the strike. It said the strike was necessary to ensure the standard of medical education, to ensure the continued maintenance of the state’s medical schools and to protect the health care rights of ordinary patients.
