The US Secretary of State said on February 14 that the US had secured a “commitment to stop buying additional Russian oil” during trade and tariff discussions with India.
“In our talks with India, we got their commitment to stop buying more Russian oil,” Rubio said.
In particular, the head of the Trump administration did not clarify whether this also includes existing contracts and all purchases from Russia.

The statement came as Rubio addressed U.S. sanctions against Russia and the country’s steps to ensure peace in Ukraine. He added that finding terms that “Ukraine can live with and that Russia will accept” has been “elusive until now.”
He spoke at the 62nd Munich Security Conference (MSC) on February 14 in Munich, southern Germany. Various heads of state, defense ministers and foreign ministers are expected to attend the three-day event from February 13 to 15, 2026, according to an AFP report.
