Delhi Police said on Saturday mutilated body of an unknown man was discovered in a canal in the Rohini area.

At 8:46 pm on Friday, the Police Control Center (PCR) was called about a body in the Haiderpur canal, after which a team of police officials reached the spot, police said.

The deceased is estimated to be between 30 and 35 years old. The head, both legs from the hip and both hands from the wrists were amputated and are missing, police said.

They added that old cut scars were also visible on the arms.

The Delhi Police further said that prima facie the body appeared to be one to two days old. Forensic and forensics teams examined the crime scene and collected evidence. The body was later sent to the BSA Hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

Efforts are underway to identify the deceased using technical surveillance and local intelligence inputs, they said.

The case was submitted to the relevant sections of the BNS and further investigation is underway.

Authorities have identified the deceased as 65-year-old Parul Rai, husband of Sukumar Rai and resident of Bhadra Colony near Mahof Range.

Neighbors claimed that the woman had entered the forest to collect firewood when she was allegedly attacked by a tiger, leading to her death.

Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Manish Singh said that after receiving reports about the discovery of a female victim in the Mahof range, a dedicated team inspected the spot and started a formal investigation.

“It is not yet clear whether the incident took place in the notified forest area. The exact cause of death, including the possibility of a tiger attack, will be confirmed only after the post-mortem report,” Singh said.

The tragedy caused widespread fear among people living in the area.
