Despite “abuse of power in large scale, indiscriminate flow of liquor and money by the ruling Congress party”, people in the urban areas of the state have reiterated that the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) is the only alternative to the ruling party by giving the opposition a heartening support in the municipal elections, BRS working president KT Rama Rao said on Friday.
Responding to the results of the elections held for 116 municipalities and seven municipal corporations, counting of which was still underway at the time of filing, Mr. Rama Rao said the victory of BRS in about 730 constituencies out of a total of over 2,580 is a clear indication of the party’s strong base and people’s support.
On the ruling party’s performance, he said it was a clear warning sign as it was only able to win half of the Guards despite using all the tactics and strategies at its disposal. Out of 116 municipalities, BRS won 15, in another the result was announced, and in another 30 municipalities, which include 15 civic associations, BRS emerged as the single largest party.
Compared to the 2020 municipal results, the performance of the Congress (the ruling party) did not even come close to the then BRS mark. Out of 130 municipalities, BRS won 22, against four for Congress and two each for BJP and MIM. This time, the ruling party could win just over half of the civic bodies (67).
In the municipal corporations, the BRS has done well, although the ruling party would have a natural advantage in local body elections, Mr. Rama Rao said. In Kothagudem Corporation, CPI won majority of seats and BRS offered unconditional support to Left Party to win the post of mayor and keep Congress and BJP at bay.
