The United Democratic Front (UDF) will take steps to boost Kerala’s economy if elected to power in the assembly elections, opposition leader VD Satheesan said.

He was speaking at a public function at Muthalakkalam Ground here on Thursday evening as part of the UDF’s ‘Puthuyuga Yathra’ campaign.

Accusing the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government of pushing people into a debt trap, Mr Satheesan said the UDF would streamline tax administration and block exchequer leakages. Government funds will be used to help the poor, he said. Mr. Satheesan claimed that the UDF has an alternative vision for the development of the state.

Meanwhile, the Congress leader accused the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) of pushing the communal line. He alleged that Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had resorted to majoritarian communalism as his efforts to “pacify” the minorities failed miserably in the Lok Sabha polls. He was followed by senior CPI(M) leaders like AK Balan and Culture Minister Saji Cherian who came out with condemnable blanket statements. Mr. Satheesan said that no communal elements would be able to flourish in Kerala.

He hailed the UDF workers who turned up for the function despite the trade union strike that was held that day and said the front would stage a miraculous victory in the next assembly elections in Kozhikode district.

Inaugurating the event, Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala said the LDF government will disintegrate in the coming days. Kozhikode District Congress Committee President K. Praveenkumar, Indian Union Muslim League National General Secretary PK Kunhalikutty and Kozhikode MP MK Raghavan said the UDF will win majority of assembly seats in the upcoming Kozhikode elections.
