Kadapa constable gets five years in jail for caste assault

A police constable was sentenced to five years in prison and fined ₹1,000 for physically assaulting and abusing a senior constable on duty on his caste behalf.

The accused Polugalla Narendra (33), hailing from Rajupalem mandal in Kadapa district and currently serving at Proddatur traffic police station, was accused of breaking into the Duvvur police station on October 24, 2018 and engaging in a scuffle with the head constable during consecutive three-day duty assignments.

Nagendra was accused of kicking a constable on the head with his shoes and abusing him with his caste name during the scuffle. When Narendra was assaulted by the constables at the station, he fled from the spot. A case was registered at the Duvvur police station and the then Sub Divisional Police Officer BR Srinivasulu conducted an investigation and filed a charge sheet under Sections 323, 355 IPC and Section (3) (i), (X) of the SC/ST Act.

Additional District Magistrate Kadapa IV G. Deena Babu, who deals with SC/ST atrocity cases, delivered the verdict on Thursday.
