In a stern but measured criticism, CPI leader K Narayana on Thursday urged political leaders across party lines to exercise restraint and desist from irresponsible comments on the Tirumala ghee adulteration controversy, saying the issue was deeply connected to the sentiments of millions of devotees.
Speaking to the media, he acknowledged that forgery had occurred beyond doubt, but “turning this matter into a theater of political opportunism is not acceptable.”
He stressed that accountability must be swift and uncompromising and said that severe punishment should be meted out to all culprits, including officials and former officials.
He accused the ruling and opposition parties of misusing the Tirupati laddu issue for selfish electoral mileage.
“Weaponizing religion for political gain is inappropriate and morally unsustainable. The political battle should be fought on issues of politics and governance. It is not desirable to involve God in it,” he said.
Pointing out that the Supreme Court has already taken up the matter, Mr. Narayana urged leaders to refrain from inflammatory public discourses that could vitiate the proceedings or deepen public distress and violate the sanctity of faith.
