Hyderabad police say don’t fall for ‘I love you’ Valentine messages: ‘Love can wait; fraudsters will not’ | Today’s news

February 12, 2026

Police have warned of “romantic scams” ahead of Valentine’s Day. Hyderabad Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar on Thursday pointed out the instinctive clicking on ‘I love you’ messages sent by fraudsters to dupe recipients.

He urged the public to be aware of common warning signs that are often overlooked due to scammers’ fraudulent methods.

“Valentine’s Day is about roses, not red flags. But while you’re looking for love on dating apps and social media, someone else might be looking at your bank balance.”

“Never Send Cash, Cryptocurrencies, Gift Cards”

Watch out for these warning signs: too fast, too dramatic – instant “I love you”, stories about working overseas, sudden emergencies or attempts to isolate you are all classic tactics used to quickly build trust and then ask for money,” Sajjanar wrote on X.

Another red flag is obvious demands for money. “Never send cash, cryptocurrency, gift cards, or share personal information with someone you haven’t met in person — whether it’s for a visa, a medical emergency, or a ‘surprise gift’ stuck at customs,” CP warned.

He suggested that citizens consult family or friends if they feel insecure in such situations, as this can help them avoid becoming a victim of scams.

“If you’re not sure, talk to a trusted friend or family member. Love can wait, but scammers can’t,” Sajjanar added.

Valentine’s Day is celebrated every year on February 14, a time full of expressions of love and affection. It offers a special opportunity to tell your partner, friends and family how much you care about them.

The celebrations begin a week earlier with Valentine’s Week, where each day has its own meaning. Celebrations begin with Rose Day on February 7, followed by Proposal Day, Chocolate Day, Teddy Day, Promise Day, Hug Day and Kiss Day. The week culminates with Valentine’s Day on February 14, which is widely recognized around the world as a celebration of love.
