More than 800 Haj pilgrims were vaccinated free of charge at special camps organized in Vellore, Ranipet, Tirupattur and Tiruvannamalai districts on Wednesday.
Officials from the Directorate of Public Health (DPH) and Preventive Medicine, which organized the initiative, said the health teams at these camps will handle the complete screening of pilgrims, health checks and vaccinations. The camp is held once a year.
The initiative, which will be completed in these districts by Friday, is being coordinated with the State and District Forest Committee. The camp is usually held at the Collectorate or the district health office due to the easy availability of these places. “Pilgrims have been given quadrivalent meningitis vaccine and polio oral drops. All pilgrims above 65 years of age have also been given influenza vaccine,” K. Satish Kumar, Deputy Director of Health Services (DDHS), Vellore, told The Hindu.
Among these districts, Tirupattur had the highest number of pilgrims, 320, who were vaccinated in the four-day camp, followed by Vellore (226), Ranipet (190) and Tiruvannamalai (71). On average, there are two doctors and two nurses in the camp.
