Delhi HC raps Rajpal Yadav in check cases: ‘You are in jail because you didn’t comply’ – What the court said | Today’s news

February 12, 2026

The Delhi High Court on Thursday (February 12) upheld actor Rajpal Yadav while hearing his bail plea in check bounce cases stemming from the debacle of his directorial debut in 2010, when he said he was in jail for defaulting on his bond. The court adjourned Rajpal Yadav’s bail hearing to Monday, February 16.

During the hearing, the court told Rajpal Yadav that the actor had arranged for payments to the complainants but failed to do so. Rajpal Yadav’s counsel told the court that around Rs 2 crore remained unpaid and would be settled accordingly.

Judge Swarana Kanta Sharma said: “You didn’t go to jail because the court gave an order. You went to jail because you failed to honor your own obligations to the court. You didn’t give money because the court asked you to, you gave money because you made a deal.”

Rejecting the actor’s counsel’s submission that his client was “misleading” about the proceedings, Justice Sharma said that Rajpal Yadav and his counsel had appeared before the court more than twenty times and promised to settle the outstanding dues but failed to do so.

“25 to 30 times you appeared in this court and were assisted by senior counsel. Your senior counsel made a statement on your behalf. Mr. (Rajpal) Yadav appeared before me through the VC at least five times and said that I will respect the statement made by my counsel and if I go abroad, I will earn some money and pay. You are not wrong,” the Bar & Bench court quoted.

In 2010, Rajpal Yadav borrowed 5 crores from M/s Murali Projects Pvt Ltd for his directorial debut film “Ata Pata Laapata” but the film flopped at the box office. He was sent to Tihar Jail after the Delhi High Court rejected his plea for more time to repay the amount due in the check bounce cases.

The actor almost has to pay 9 million crowns.

Rajpal Yadav is known for ‘Mujhse Shaadi Karogi’, ‘Waqt’, ‘Phir Hera Pheri’, ‘Partner’, ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa’, ‘Hungama’ and ‘Chup Chup Ke’.
