Priya Sachdeva Kapur has filed a civil suit for defamation in the Delhi High Court ₹20 million in damages against Mandhira Kapur Smith and podcast host Pooja Chaudhri, claiming that statements made about her through podcasts, interviews, social media posts and reposted online content have seriously damaged her reputation and caused her emotional distress.
In the suit, filed under the court’s ordinary original civil jurisdiction, Kapur sought a decree for damages amounting to ₹20,00,00,000 for alleged loss of reputation, mental agony and social humiliation.
She also asked the court to issue permanent and binding injunctions prohibiting the defendants from posting or distributing any further allegedly defamatory content and ordering them to remove the existing material from digital, social and media platforms.
According to the lawsuit, Priya Sachdeva Kapur, the widow of the late businessman Sunjay Kapur, alleged that shortly after her husband’s death in June 2025, a series of statements began to be made against her that she claims were false and damaged her public image and personal dignity.

The lawsuit states that such content appeared in interviews, podcasts and on social media and was later widely shared and republished on online platforms.
The complaint specifically relates to interviews aired on the “InControversial with Pooja Chaudhri” podcast, where the plaintiff says remarks were made that later spread to platforms such as YouTube, Instagram and X, increasing their reach and impact.
She claims that the continued availability and circulation of such content has caused continued damage to her reputation and distress to her and her children.
Apart from the civil suit, Priya Sachdeva Kapur also recently filed a criminal defamation complaint against Sunjay Kapur’s sister Mandhira Kapur Smith and another person. In that complaint, she alleged that a series of statements made against her in podcasts, media interviews, social media platforms and reposted online content are part of a sustained and deliberate campaign to damage her reputation. The complaint was submitted to the court of first instance, where proceedings were initiated in accordance with the law.
In a civil action in the High Court, the plaintiff sought, in addition to damages, directions to the defendants to issue a public, unconditional apology and retraction of the same force and scope as the alleged defamatory publications. It also sought the removal of all such content from digital, social, electronic and print media platforms.

The lawsuit further chronicles past events and disputes in the family and business spheres to explain the background to the current dispute. It relates to past disagreements, legal proceedings and communications that the plaintiff says show a continuing pattern of hostility.
She claims that the statements made against her falsely impugn her integrity, professional conduct and role in business affairs, thereby affecting her standing in society.
Meanwhile, in a separate but related family dispute, the Delhi High Court two days ago suggested mediation while hearing a suit filed by Rani Kapur regarding the RK Family Trust. The case concerns a cause of action seeking to dissolve a trust and protect assets.

During the hearing, the court called on all parties to try to resolve their disputes amicably. The court emphasized the importance of family relationships, noting that the assets in question were the result of one’s life’s efforts and should be seen as a blessing rather than a cause of conflict. The court advised the parties to respect the relationship and to try for an amicable solution.
The court was hearing a submission on behalf of Rani Kapur, who sought to preserve the estate and expressed concern that the assets could be affected. Allegations were also made during the proceedings that Priya Kapur acted in a hasty and fraudulent manner in relation to certain matters relating to the estate. Those filings were submitted to the court as part of her lawsuit.
The High Court took cognizance of the nature of the dispute and suggested mediation as a possible way to resolve the issues relating to the RK Family Trust and avoid protracted litigation within the family. (OR)
