Commuters on the Namma Metro faced inconvenience on Tuesday after UPI-based payments at cash counters and through online applications saw a sharp drop in success due to a nationwide technical outage.

According to Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (BMRCL), UPI transactions made by scanning QR codes at station counters and through mobile apps were affected on Tuesday between 6:40 pm and 9:00 pm. The breach, BMRCL said in a report, was not due to any error in its systems but stemmed from a technical problem at the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which manages the UPI network across the country.

“BMRCL facilitates UPI payments through multiple bank manipulations. However, all were affected during the above period due to the nationwide issue. Our internal systems were functioning normally and our role in the outage was nil,” BMRCL said.

Services were fully restored after 9pm, allowing passengers to resume digital payments without any issues.
