Telangana is expected to face major disruptions on February 12 as more than 30 lakh workers across various sectors are likely to participate in a state-wide ‘Bharat Bandh’ on Thursday. The strike was organized by the Joint Forum of Central Trade Unions against the recently announced trade deal between India and the US.
With Bharat Bandh scheduled for February 12, people across Telangana are seeking clarity on whether daily services like banks, schools, government offices and public transport will remain operational.
Why Bharat Bandh on February 12?
The Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) has objected to the trade framework, saying it may have a negative impact on Indian farmers. The organization warned that cheaper imported goods could find their way into domestic markets, making it difficult for local agricultural production to compete.
SKM chairman Hannan Mollah called the deal “a betrayal of farmers” and said rising imports could weaken farm incomes and threaten livelihoods.
Farmer groups conducted awareness campaigns in several states between 4 February and 11 February, leading to the call for a nationwide Bharat Bandh on 12 February.
According to SKM, trade agreements with countries such as the US and the European Union could disadvantage smaller economies and put additional pressure on the agricultural sector.
Union Minister Piyush Goyal defended the deal, stressing that key agricultural sectors were preserved. The center said dairy products, major food grains, vegetables and spices are not included in the tariff concessions.
The government also clarified that genetically modified foods will not be allowed under the agreement.
Goyal stated that Indian agricultural produce will have zero access to the US market, while US agricultural goods will not get tariff benefits when entering India.
Will banks, schools and transport services function on February 12 in Telangana?
So far, there has been no official notification from the Telangana authorities announcing a holiday for banks, schools or government offices due to Bharat Bandh.
However, if protests or demonstrations take place, public transport and road movement may face disruption in certain areas. Commuters are advised to monitor updates issued by local officials and transport authorities before travelling.
Private offices and businesses are expected to make independent decisions based on local conditions. Residents are advised to stay alert for official alerts regarding the latest information on Bharat Bandh in Telangana.
