The CM will lay the foundation for a short tunnel near Hebbal today

In a new development, Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar and Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda will attend the inauguration of the three-lane short transitional double tunnel from Hebbal Junction to Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries University (KVAFSU).

The short tunnel will be 2.27 km long and an overhead corridor will be constructed from KVAFSU to Mehkri Circle. Bangalore Development Authority (BDA), the implementing agency, recently awarded the contract. The contractor also performed soil tests.

According to sources, the project was proposed by the Bengaluru Traffic Police to help ease traffic congestion in areas such as Ganganagar, Sanjay Nagar and RT Nagar. While there was initial public opposition, the government continued to support the project, citing the congestion-reducing impact of short tunnels on a micro-level.

The Karnataka cabinet gave administrative approval to the project in December 2025. Tenders were called twice for the project as no contractor showed interest the first time.
