The Legal Coordinating Committee for Government Doctors (LCC) has demanded that the Tamil Nadu government immediately conduct transfer counseling for obstetricians in government medical colleges. It also demands that the government abandon its plan to reduce the number of paediatrician’s posts in the state’s medical teaching hospitals.

A note from the LCC said that in Tamil Nadu, transfer counseling was conducted last week for doctors who were already on duty. However, despite 57 vacancies in the obstetrics department, counseling for obstetricians did not take place. Several requests were made to the director of medical education but were not acted upon, the note said. It pointed out that obstetricians face many challenges: they are paid some of the lowest wages in the country, yet they continue to do life-saving work, playing a vital role in reducing maternal and infant mortality.

Denying obstetricians the opportunity for transfer advice – while it is provided to other specialists – is unfair, the LLC said, saying that traveling long distances to work across counties causes severe psychological stress and physical exhaustion, affecting doctors’ family lives and children.

Raising another issue, the LLC expressed its strong opposition to the reduction of existing paediatrician posts to create posts for DM-trained neonatologists. She said that with the increase in the number of patients, cutting these posts would cause serious setbacks in the future. The right approach, the LLC said, would be to increase pediatrician jobs while creating new neonatologist jobs.

The LLC urged the state’s health minister to act immediately, carry out transfer advice for obstetricians and withdraw the plan to cut paediatrician posts.
