Steve Smith rushed into cover as Australia reeled from a massive injury

February 11, 2026

Australia have called up Steve Smith as cover for the 2026 T20 World Cup following an injury to captain Mitchell Marsh. The Aussies, already without pace duo Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins through injury, have now been hit further by the loss of their captain.

On Wednesday 11 February, Marsh missed Australia’s opening match against Ireland at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo with a groin injury. In his absence, Travis Head stepped in to lead the side in the face-off.

Australia are next scheduled to face Zimbabwe’s Sikandar Raza on Friday, February 13 at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. The Aussies will be hoping their skipper regains full fitness as Mitchell Marsh brings huge firepower and valuable experience with his explosive bat.
