Expired food seized in Guntur raids

The Food Safety Department in collaboration with Legal Metrology officials raided 16 food preparation and serving units in Guntur on Tuesday and seized a large quantity of expired food and sweets.

Joint inspection teams covered 12 restaurants, two patisseries and two bakeries across the city. State Joint Controller of Food N. Purnachandra Rao said the raids were carried out as part of intensified checks to ensure food safety and compliance with legal norms.

The establishments inspected included Gongura Restaurant, Bismillah Restaurant, Mayura Family Restaurant, Swagat Delight, 99 Biryani, Alkabeer Restaurant, Nawab Arabic Restaurant, Biryani Palace, Madras Bilal, Babu Biryani, Hotel Shubham in Dargah Centre, Hotel Subhani, Sairam Food Sweets, Balaji, Bangery Sweets in Brodyan and Srujana Goranti Gorant Bakery in Pattabhipuram.

During the checks, officials seized 48 kg of cooked expired food from Bismillah Restaurant, 26 kg from Swagat Delight Restaurant and 5 kg from Gongura Restaurant. Besides, 26 kg of expired sweets were seized from Sairam Food Sweets.

Mr. Purnachandra Rao said five notices were issued to food business operators for improving hygiene, infrastructure and compliance with food safety standards, while one establishment was served a notice for operating without a valid license. As part of another measure, 19 food samples were taken and sent for laboratory analysis on suspicion of the use of unauthorized dyes and other impurities.

The raids were conducted in the presence of B. Srinivas, Assistant Food Controller, Krishna District, and G. Venkateswara Rao, Assistant Food Controller, Nellore, along with 10 Food Safety Officers. Officials including a joint controller, a deputy controller and 10 employees of the legal metrology department also took part in the operation.
