Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla will not preside over the affairs of the House until the Opposition’s notice of motion for his removal is disposed of, sources said on Tuesday (10 Feb 2026), citing “moral reasons” for the decision.

The Speaker has already directed the Secretary General of the Lok Sabha to examine and process the notification as per the rules. Mr. Birla’s decision comes after opposition parties led by the Congress filed a call for his removal, alleging that he is “blatantly partisan” in running the affairs of the House.

Responding to the Congress’s claim that the Speaker’s allegations against her women MPs were baseless, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju released a February 4 video on X showing the main opposition MP around the Prime Minister’s front row seat in the Lok Sabha.

“The Most Degrading Behavior”

If the ruling party did not restrain its members, Mr Rijiju said, there would be “very ugly scenes”. “Congress party takes pride in the most humiliating behavior of its MPs!! If we don’t suspend all BJP MPs and allow women MPs to clash with Congress women MPs, it would lead to a very ugly scene. We highly value protecting the dignity and sanctity of Parliament,” he said in his post on X.

Later, while talking to reporters, he said the Congress MPs even crossed the bench where the Prime Minister sits and entered several rows of Finance Ministry benches.

“The BJP women MPs were very upset with this behavior of the Congress MPs. We stopped our MPs in a physical confrontation. Then these opposition women MPs went to the speaker’s house and threatened the Speaker. The BJP MPs filed a petition. Let’s see how the Speaker acts and what steps she takes,” he said.
