MLA protests GBA’s non-commercial license rule on roads less than 40 feet wide

February 11, 2026

Former minister and BJP MLA S. Suresh Kumar has written to Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) chief M. Maheshwar Rao objecting to a recent circular that said no business licenses would be issued or renewed for businesses on roads less than 40 feet wide.

In his letter, Mr. Kumar said the rule will affect thousands of street vendors and small shop owners in residential buildings. “As per my information, there are nearly 2.5 million street vendors and 1.6 to 1.8 million kirana stores. This new rule will affect nearly 20 million people in the city,” he said.

“In several areas, especially in the outer zones, there are no roads 40 feet wide or wider. Some areas in the city center also do not have 40 feet wide roads. Should traders operating from these areas move to roads that are 40 feet wide or wider? If so, what will the residents of these areas do for their daily needs such as food? The GBA should think in a pro-people way,” he said in a letter to the people.

“No New Rule”

Responding to these concerns, GBA sources said that they are only implementing zoning regulations in the city as per Master Plan Revision – 2015 which is currently in force and not any new rule.
