Uttar Pradesh’s budget session got off to a roaring start on Monday, with Samajwadi Party (SP) legislators staging a protest and highlighting issues such as special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, UGC regulation, inflation and unemployment.
The uproar began when Governor Anandiben Patel began his speech in the House, even as opposition leaders shouted slogans including “Governor, come back”.
After Ms Patel’s speech, Finance Minister Suresh Khanna unveiled the government’s economic survey, which outlined an investment-led growth strategy to become a trillion-dollar state. This is the first time that the state has submitted a review before presenting the budget.
CM seeks restraint
Speaking to reporters, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said he hoped for constructive discussions to ensure smooth functioning of the House. “Legislature is an important pillar of democracy. If any member has to raise any issue, then instead of disrupting the proceedings, he can have a dialogue because the government believes in dialogue to solve problems.”
“The budget for 2026-27 will be presented on February 11. It will be followed by a discussion. The budget session will be held from February 9 to 20,” the CM said.
Hitting out at the government, Bahujan Samaj Party president Mayawati alleged that people from all sections of society across the state are in distress due to the Yogi Adityanath government’s “bad” policies.
In post X, Ms. Mayawati noted that the Governor’s speech did not focus on the upliftment of the society or the development of the state.
“But above all, they are worried about their lives, property and religion, which the governor should have warned the government about so that the people of the state and the opposition get some security,” said the BSP chief in the X post.
