A delegation of the Karnataka Growers Federation (KGF) met Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Bhupender Yadav in Delhi on Monday and urged him to take concrete measures to end human-elephant conflict in Chikkamagaluru, Hassan and Kodagu districts.
A delegation led by Halase Shivanna, KGF president, apprised the minister of the problems faced by growers in the Malnad region due to the conflict. Many people were killed by elephants and the animals damaged crops, causing huge losses, he said.
The Minister told the delegation that he was well aware of the issue and assured the KGF of the Union Government’s support in addressing the issue. He also mentioned that his department has set aside funds to deal with the problem.
The delegation also met MEF&CC Additional Director General Ramesh K. Pandey on this issue. The officer informed the delegation that the ministry has gathered information on the conflict prevailing in eight states and prepared a comprehensive action plan to deal with the situation. He also said that a joint meeting of representatives of the Centre, Karnataka State and KGF will be held in Bengaluru in the third week of May this year. The delegation gave the officer a detailed report on the human-elephant conflict.
The delegation included KGF vice president KK Vishwanath, Chikkamagaluru District Planters’ Association president KU Rathish, Mudigere taluk unit secretary KD Manohar and Hassan district unit representative MG Sachin.
