A restaurant bill is often accompanied by fennel seeds (saunf) – intended to aid digestion or freshen the mouth. However, a Reddit user was left confused after being handed a meal bill along with a small cup of coffee beans. The unusual gesture has now sparked curiosity on social media.
“What does that even mean?”
In a post that quickly went viral, the user said he had never come across such a practice before and was confused as to its purpose. “I got coffee beans with my bill. What does that even mean?” the post read and added that the beans were served in a cup when the bill came.
Unsure if he should have taken them, the user did exactly that – and continued to eat the beans on his way home.

The Internet responds with humor and explanation
The post triggered a wave of amused and informative reactions, with many users explaining that the gesture has its roots in hospitality and a sensory tradition, particularly in cafes and restaurants. According to commenters, roasted coffee beans are sometimes offered as a palate cleanser, a natural mouth freshener, or simply to leave guests with the aroma of coffee after a meal.

One user joked: “You collect them until you have enough to open your own cafe.”
Another explained: “Dear OP, it’s kind of a palate cleanser. You don’t chew the beans – you just suck on them for a few minutes and then spit them out. It also helps with bad breath after eating.”

From symbolism to puns
Some users offered symbolic interpretations, with one writing: “It’s a lucky symbol representing health, wealth and happiness.”
Others leaned into the humor, with a fourth user quipping: “They didn’t want you to spill the beans on the bill.”
Meanwhile, last month, a Reddit user in Bengaluru warned others of an alleged deliberate scam, claiming that the merchant was charging more than double the actual amount. “Always check your bill after purchase,” the user warned.
In a viral post, a Redditor asked how many shoppers are still in the habit of checking their accounts after making a purchase.

The user then said he visited a drug store to buy a tube of antiseptic cream and a strip of headache tablets.
“The person asked for my number because I’m registered there and asked me to pay via UPI saying that giving change would be a problem,” the Redditor wrote, adding that the merchant listed the total amount of the bill as ₹223.
“I was a bit worried because my mental calculation indicated that the amount should be within the range ₹100,” the user commented.
When cross-checking the prices, the Redditor himself discovered that the actual total was indeed lower ₹100. “I took a strip of tablets and ointment and checked their MRP and I was right – it was only ₹94 and a few decimal places,” he said.
The Redditor added that he then asked for a printed receipt. Sensing that he was caught, the businessman allegedly corrected the amount.
“When I asked for a printed bill, the person asked if something was wrong. Then he took his medicine, apologized, and corrected the bill to the correct price,” said the Redditor.
