Even countries at the forefront of responsible tourism (RT) have a lot to learn from Kerala and what sets the state apart on the global RT map is its people-centric model, observed experts who attended the Global Responsible Tourism Meet in Kozhikode.
Kevin Phun, director of the Center for Responsible Tourism in Singapore, said the world recognized Singapore as a leading country in RT. However, he noted that Singapore’s story has largely focused on sustainable waste management models.
“Due to the prominent nature of its tourism industry, there is limited community participation in Singapore. In contrast, Kerala’s RT initiatives are exemplary. There is extensive participation by the common people, which has helped improve their quality of life significantly. The Kerala model stands out as a global example,” he said.
Oshan Lepcha, coordinator of the Nature Conservation and Tourism Association, who gave a presentation on the development of tourism in the northeastern states, said that rural tourism forms the very foundation of RT. Mr. Lepcha noted that the first step was to introduce people in remote villages to the possibilities of modern life.
Speaking at the event, Komal Darira, founder of Women for World Tours, pointed out the need to take steps to increase the representation of women in the public space. Ayusha Prasen, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Community Homestay Network, called for government support for women-led tourism businesses.
The two-day meeting ended on Sunday (February 8). Kerala Tourism Additional Secretary Jagadeesh D., Kerala RT Mission Director General Rupesh Kumar and others addressed the concluding session.
