Kerala University has lodged a formal complaint with the state police chief seeking legal action against CPI(M)-backed syndicate members and Students’ Federation of India (SFI) activists in connection with the recent demonstration at the university.
The complaint, filed by the registrar on the instructions of Acting Vice-Chancellor (VC) Mohanan Kunnummal, accuses the group of forcibly entering the VC’s chamber. The members of the Syndicate, G. Muralidharan and N. Pramod, were charged with aiding and abetting the illegal entry of students.
According to the complaint, a group of students barged into the VC’s office, locked the staff in their rooms, created an atmosphere of intimidation and damaged property, including memorabilia and other materials kept in the office. Professor Kunnummal was not present in the office at the time of the incident.
The registrar’s letter also said that documentary evidence indicated that two members of the Syndicate colluded with the protesting students and actively assisted them in carrying out the act of violence. Security personnel reported that the Syndicate members instructed them to leave their duty stations when they tried to stop the students from entering the VC’s office.
‘verbal abuse’
CCTV footage allegedly showing students raising slogans in the VC’s office, Mr. Muralidharan shouting outside the hall and threatening and verbally assaulting the VC’s private secretary was handed over to the police along with the complaint.
The protest was organized and demanded the immediate release of ₹50 lakh, earmarked as budgetary allocation for organizing the university’s youth festival, to the current university union. However, the VC insists that since the existing union organized a youth festival in April last year, the newly elected union should be responsible for organizing the next festival after the elections.
