Signaling a major shift in the political dynamics of the plantation sector in Devikulam constituency, S. Rajendran, a former CPI(M) MLA, looks set to contest as the BJP candidate. During a mega rally held in Munnar on Sunday, BJP state president Rajeev Chandrasekhar expressed his desire for Mr. Rajendran to represent the party in Devikulam, noting that the final decision would be taken by the BJP central leadership.
“S. Rajendran will lead the BJP’s campaign in Devikulam constituency during the upcoming assembly elections. These elections are vital for Munnar and will decide the future of the plantation sector,” Mr. Chandrasekhar said.
He added that over the years both the main fronts have only made empty promises. “In the next elections, Munnar will change and a developed Munnar will emerge. This transformation will be manifested under the leadership of Mr. Rajendran,” he said.
Mr. Chandrasekhar further asserted that only an NDA MLA can ensure real development in the region.
During the meeting, Mr. Rajendran demanded that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) investigate the wealth of CPI(M) leaders in Munnar. “During my tenure as an MLA, I worked for the welfare of plantation workers. But for the last five years, the CPI(M) has blocked my efforts,” Mr. Rajendran said.
He specifically targeted CPI(M) district secretariat member KV Sasi and alleged that the leaders “travel in cars bought with plantation workers’ money”.
“I have not amassed assets in my 40-year political career and I am ready to face a social audit. The ED should probe the sudden financial growth of CPI(M) leaders in Munnar,” he added.
After months of speculation, Mr. Rajendran officially joined the BJP on January 18. According to party leaders, hundreds of planters followed suit and joined the party at a rally in Munnar on Sunday. The march started at Munnar Juma Masjid and ended at Old Munnar.
Party sources suggest that the BJP is strengthening its roots in Devikulam through Mr. Rajendran’s influence. “The large turnout of plantation workers on Sunday indicates that Mr. Rajendran has already started his campaign among them,” the party president said.
