The India-US agreement signed by the Union government favored the US and would have a bad impact on domestic farmers, said DMK MP Kanimozhi.

It said goods exported by India would be subject to 18% tax, it said goods imported from the US would have no tax. She warned that agricultural products from the US would be dumped in India.

“Food grains produced by Indian farmers could not compete with American goods. What will happen to the future of Indian farmers?” she asked.

She was speaking at a DMK Youth Wing conference at Kalkurichi near here in Virudhunagar district on Saturday.

For the first time in the history of the Indian Parliament, a motion of thanks to the President for her address was passed in the House without the Prime Minister’s address, she said. “The prime minister did not come to the House because the opposition parties asked him where he was when the security of the country was threatened. He could not answer,” said the MP.

While the prime minister is expected to respond at least after all opposition party MPs have been evicted, this has not happened.

She tore down the reason given by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Prakash Birla that the Prime Minister was advised not to come to the Lok Sabha to avoid a threat from women MPs.

Quoting former US President Barack Obama’s iconic slogan ‘Yes we can’, Ms Kanimozhi told the youth wing cadres ‘Yes you can’ to help bring about a change in national politics.

Senior party leaders KN Nehru, I. Periyasamy, Tiruchi Siva, KKSSR Ramachandran and Thangam Thennarasu were present.
