The Kerala State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) on Saturday sought a report on the steps taken to provide compensation to the family of a mahout killed by a jumbo at the Kottoor Elephant Rehabilitation Center two days ago.
Commission chairman Alexander Thomas also sought to know if any preventive measures had been taken to prevent a similar incident from happening again. The report was sought from the conservator of the Agasthyavanam Biological Park, which houses the elephant rehabilitation centre.
Incident
The direction comes two days after mahout Vishnu was killed by a jumbo at a rehabilitation center while he was bathing an elephant in the nearby Neyyar dam reservoir.
The commission’s order came in a case it registered based on newspaper reports of the incident. The panel also ordered the conservator to report to it on what it found during its investigation into the incident. He directed that the report be submitted to the committee within one month and listed the matter for further consideration on March 24.
The jury said that a deputy conservator should be present before it at the next date.
The jumbo hit Vishnu with its trunk, knocking him underwater and drowning him as a result, police said.
