Unnao rape: SC likely to hear Kuldeep Sengar’s bail plea on February 9 in death of survivor’s father | Today’s news

February 8, 2026

The Supreme Court is likely to hear ousted BJP leader Kuldeep Singh Sengar’s bail plea in the Unnao rape survivor’s death case. The case is likely to be heard on Monday, February 9, news agency PTI reported.

What happened?

Rape convict and former BJP legislator Kuldeep Singh Sengar has approached the Supreme Court seeking bail in a case related to the custodial death of the rape victim’s father.

In the death case, the court sentenced Sengar to 10 years rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 10 million, March 13, 2020.

The court said “no leniency” could be shown for killing the “sole breadwinner” of the family, PTI reported.

The latest development in the case came after the Delhi High Court on January 19 refused to suspend Sengar’s 10-year jail term in the case citing delays in the trial.

The High Court then said the delay was partly due to several applications it had filed in the matter.

Sengar has now challenged the high court decision in the Supreme Court.

The case so far

The trial court, which found the defendant not guilty of murder in the father’s case, gave him the maximum sentence for the crime of manslaughter, not amounting to murder, after ruling that the murder was not premeditated.

Sengar’s appeal in the main rape case against the December 2019 judgment that convicted him and sentenced him to life imprisonment, as well as his father’s case, is being heard by the High Court.

His sentence was suspended by the High Court on 23 December 2025 pending the hearing of his appeal against his conviction and sentence in the rape case.

The Supreme Court suspended the stay on December 29, 2025.
