Three people who have been declared stateless by the Foreigners’ Tribunal (FT) have been ordered to leave Assam and India within 24 hours of receiving notice from the government.
The orders issued by the Karbi Anglong District Commissioner under Section 2 of the Immigrants (Deportation from Assam) Act, 1950 were issued on February 2 after the FT in question labeled them as foreigners.
The trio consists of Md Faizul Haque of Manja Nadipar village, Md Fakaruddin of Jadav Rai Grant village and Md Rafiqul Ali of Hidim Teron Basti. The first two were declared foreigners in cases registered in 2006 and the third in 2007.
They were instructed to leave Assam and India through Dhubri, Sribhumi or South Salmara-Mankachar districts. These districts share a border with Bangladesh.
The district authorities have also directed various departments to take necessary action on the orders, including confiscation of all movable and immovable property belonging to these individuals, deletion of their names from electoral rolls, cancellation of their ration cards and freezing or cancellation of their Aadhaar cards.
Officials were also instructed to remove their names from government welfare programs and social security benefits.
The orders are part of the Assam government’s ongoing efforts to enforce FT judgments against declared foreigners by invoking the provisions of the Immigration (Deportation from Assam) Act.
Similar notices have been served to many declared foreigners in Assam since mid-2025, when Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the state government would follow a 1950 law to expedite the detection and deportation of “illegal immigrants” instead of a lengthy legal process.
