Aksharam Aarogyam, a comprehensive school health and wellness programme, has been launched by the Health Department in collaboration with the General Education and Local Government Departments.
The goal of the project, which is aimed at students from I to XII. classes in all government and aided schools across the state, is to ensure early intervention and systematic health monitoring for the young generation. In the initial phase, 61,264 primary school pupils (grades I to IV) in the district will undergo a thorough health examination. Trained health professionals will assess general physical health, visual and hearing impairments, and learning disabilities. All findings, along with basic data such as blood type and vaccination status, will be documented in a special health card prepared by the Ministry of Health.
Follow-up system
The program includes a robust follow-up system where students requiring specialized care will be referred to the nearest health centers for professional consultation after primary screening. To ensure smooth implementation, specialized training has already been conducted for health workers across all health blocks in the district. In addition to the physical screening, the project extends to upper primary, middle school and upper secondary school students through educational sessions. These lessons will focus on physical and mental well-being, proper nutrition, the importance of regular exercise and drug education.
District Medical Officer AL Sheeja launched the program at St. Joseph’s School, while Principal Sr. Rose Margaret chaired the event. District Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) Officer Linda Joseph, District Program Manager Arogya Keralam Dev Kiran and Senior Superintendent Education Department Aji Kumar also spoke on the occasion.
