Dance with joy: Gavaskar’s promise to Suryakumar Yadav if India defend T20 crown

February 5, 2026

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar once again captured the imagination of cricket fans with a heartfelt and light-hearted promise. Ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026, Gavaskar said he would dance with joy if Suryakumar Yadav-led India manage to defend their T20 World Cup title.

Gavaskar made the remark during a discussion on India Today’s Salaam Cricket, where he spoke candidly about what India’s victories in major tournaments still mean to him. Even at the age of 75, the former starter admitted that the sight of the Indian flag raised after winning the title still moves him deeply.

“When you lift the trophy and accept it, I will start dancing,” Gavaskar said. “Dancing is my cardio. Everyone else does intense cardio, but I can’t do it at my age. So I do a little bit of cardio, and that’s dancing. There’s so much joy in seeing your captain and your country’s flag go up. Sometimes the emotions just come out.”

Addressing Indian captainGavaskar summed up his message simply. “Do your job, win the trophy and I’ll take care of the rest.”

JOY AND PRIDE OF GAVASKAR

For Gavaskar, India’s victory on the world stage is not just about records or legacies. It’s about pride and emotions that never fade, no matter how many years pass. The prospect of India defending their T20 World Cup crown, something no men’s team has done so far, clearly excites him.

He admitted that watching the current team gives him confidence with a strong middle order, impressive all-rounders and a balanced bowling attack. More than tactics, however, his enthusiasm is fueled by emotion as he sees India succeed.

Gavaskar’s promise also reflects his bond with the players and his ability to connect with modern cricketers despite belonging to a different era.

THE LAST VOWS OF THE GAVASKARS

This is not the first time that Gavaskar has made an emotional pledge associated with Indian cricket. He made this promise during India’s Women’s World Cup campaign at home jam with Jemimah Rodrigues if the team won the title. He later surprised her with a bat-shaped guitar, creating a special memory.

That moment showed that Gavaskar’s words are never empty. Now, as India chase another historic milestone under Suryakumar Yadav, fans will be watching closely. And if India defend their T20 crown, Gavaskar’s celebration dance could become one of the most joyous images of the tournament.
