February 5, 2026

The Government of Karnataka has established a 10-member expert commission headed by Prof. S. Sadagopan, former director of the International Institute of Information Technology Bangalore (IIITB) to make relevant recommendations for technical education reform.

Prof. Jagadish, Prof. S. Gopalakrishna and Prof. Y. Narahari of Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, Shyam S. Rao, CTO Carborundum Ltd., S. Vidyashankar, Vice-Chancellor of Visvesvaraya Technological College (VTU), Administrator KartaVCE University Excursion, Director of Visavaraya University The committee members are Authority (KEA), Deputy Secretary, Higher Education Department and Chief Executive Officer, Karnataka State Board of Higher Education.

The government directed the committee to conduct a study and review the intake of computer science and related courses, revise the syllabus of basic engineering courses according to current industry and employment requirements, take measures to attract students to basic engineering courses and other aspects and submit a report within a month.

Falling demand

More than 9,000 seats in computer science and allied fields will remain unallocated during the admission process for professional undergraduate engineering courses through KEA in the state for the academic year 2025-26.

In addition, in recent years, a large number of students who graduated from computer science and related fields have been left without a job.

On the other hand, the acceptance rate for basic engineering fields, such as mechanical engineering, construction, electrical engineering and others, is significantly decreasing. These courses in some private universities and technical colleges in the state have reached the closure stage, according to officials.

Employability

“Earlier, the engineering colleges functioning under the jurisdiction of the state higher education department were renowned nationally and internationally for imparting high-quality technical education. It is alarming that only 17% of engineering graduates in the state are getting jobs,” the order said, highlighting the need for review and remedial measures.
