Kufos launches a new initiative to protect Kadamakuda

February 3, 2026

Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (Kufos) has announced a new initiative for the conservation of Kadamakuda.

Celebrated for its traditional cultivation of Pokkali paddy fields, the Kadamakudy Grama Panchayat has sustained a community of fishermen, agricultural laborers and construction workers for generations. “However, Pokkali agriculture, once the backbone of the local economy, today faces mounting environmental, economic and structural challenges. It is against this backdrop that Kufos has stepped forward with a commitment to provide scientific guidance and institutional support,” the organization added in a press release.

As the first phase of the initiative, Kufos will conduct a detailed survey at the local level in Kadamakudy panchayat. The study will examine issues related to agriculture, irrigation and wetland conservation faced by the local community. Based on the findings, a comprehensive project plan tailored to the specific needs of Kadamakuda will be prepared. The university will also consider including the panchayat in the village intake program, thereby ensuring sustained engagement and long-term intervention.

MK Sajeevan, Head, Directorate of Extension, Kufos, led the awareness program organized in Kadamakudy as part of World Wetlands Day celebrations.
