Harshit Rana shrugs off a painful past to come through when India needed him the most
Sometimes the toughest battles are fought out of the spotlight. For Harshit Rana, the past few months have been less about taking wickets and more about overcoming the frustration of watching from the sidelines.
One of India’s brightest fast-bowling prospects, the 24-year-old saw his rapid rise come to a screeching halt after suffering a knee injury during India’s World Cup T20 warm-up match against South Africa.

The failure not only ruled him out of the T20 World Cup but also forced him to miss the entire IPL 2026 season, bringing his momentum to an abrupt halt. Rana underwent knee surgery and spent months rehabbing, leaving many wondering how quickly he would get back into rhythm.
But on Friday in Belfast, Harshit provided the perfect answer. Coming back to India’s playing XI for the opening T20I against Ireland, the right-arm paceman produced career-best T20I figures of 3 for 24, though the visitors eventually suffered a 34-run defeat.
His charm was a reminder of the qualities that made him one of India’s most exciting young quicks before the injury. Bowling at pace, pulling awkward bounces and using his variations smartly, Harshit kept troubling the Irish batsmen.
Although the result did not go as India wanted, his comeback performance offered a major positive for India and reaffirmed that the young pacer is ready to make up for lost time.
HOW HARSHIT CAME BACK
When India needed someone to take charge again, Harshit Rana answered the call. The fast bowler produced a fiery spell, combining pace, bounce and clever variations to derail the Irish innings. His incisive opening burst reduced the hosts to 36 for 3 in the over, putting India firmly in command.
Despite conceding two boundaries to Ross Adair early in his spell, Harshit hit back immediately by forcing the opener into a miscued pull. A strong top edge flew behind the wicket where Sanju Samson completed a fine catch. In his second over, Harshit struck again and dismissed Tim Tector with a long delivery that extracted another bounce. Tector failed to cross and offered a simple catch to Shreyas Iyer at mid-off.
Harshit continued to test the Irish batsmen throughout the innings, repeatedly beating the outside edge of Benjamin Calitz and Lorcan Tucker with deliveries that clumsily connected and rose. He came back in the dying overs to deliver the knockout blow, removing Ireland captain Lorcan Tucker for a well-played 50. Tucker picked the slower ball but only found Tilak Varma at deep mid-wicket.
Harshit earned praise from captain Shreyas Iyer after his excellent spell.
“Harshit Rana played phenomenally well. To come back from injury, to showcase his talent and showcase his talent is just great,” Shreyas said during the post-match presentation ceremony.
HARSHIT NEEDS SUPPORT
Harshit could hardly have done more in Belfast. Returning from a long injury layoff, the paceman gave India the first breakthroughs they desperately needed. However, his efforts came to naught as the rest of the offense and batting unit failed to match his intensity.
After Ireland were reduced to 51 for 4, Gareth Delany’s counter-attack of 49 revived the innings and shifted the momentum. Prasidh Krishna endured a difficult outing, conceding 57 runs without a wicket in his four overs. Washington Sundar conceded 19 runs in the single over he bowled, while Axar Patel proved costly in his first two overs before redeeming himself by taking two wickets in the final over.
India’s batting did not fare any better. Apart from Abhishek Sharma’s explosive half-century and Shivam Dube’s brisk cameo, the visitors struggled throughout the chase and were bowled out for 148, giving Ireland a famous victory.
Harshit showed that he is back to his best but India will need a much stronger collective effort if they are to level the series. With the visitors 0-1 down, the onus will once again be on the young pacer to lead the bowling attack as India look to avoid a series defeat in their first assignment as the reigning T20 World Cup champions.
