In the last three years, central universities, Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) and National Institutes of Technology (NITs) have jointly filled 28,639 seats under “mission mode”, the Union Education Ministry told Parliament on Monday (February 2, 2025).

Of the 28,639 faculty and non-faculty posts filled, 12% or 3,485 posts were filled by Scheduled Castes (SCs); 5% or 1,471 seats were occupied by Scheduled Tribes (STs); and 21% or 6,013 seats were filled by Other Backward Classes (OBCs), data provided by the Union Education Ministry in the Lok Sabha showed.

Reservation of 15% seats for SC, 7.5% for ST and 27% for OBC is mandatory.

State education minister Sukanta Majumdar shared the data on Monday in response to a question by Congress MP from Sasaram in Bihar, Manoj Kumar, who asked for “existing numbers and percentage of staff” across central universities, IITs, IIMs, NITs, All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), etc., and timelines for filling vacancies.

The filling of vacancies is a continuous process, Mr. Majumdar said in response, adding that the ministry was not actively involved in the recruitment of staff for these institutes. He further said that the Ministry of Education had written to the institutes for recruitment and filling of vacancies in “mission mode”.

As of September 2022, the Ministry of Education said that all central colleges, including IITs, IIMs, NITs and central universities, are filling up “mission mode” seats, resulting in a total of 29,979 vacancies in all central colleges, including about 17,494 faculty vacancies.

Looking at recruitment data for central universities, IITs, IIMs, NITs and IIITs separately, the ministry said a total of 28,639 posts, “including 3,485 SCs, 1,471 STs and 6,013 OBCs”, were filled.

Further, for AIIMS, New Delhi, the department said that there were a total of 781 faculty members in the position, including 118 SC (15.1%), 40 ST (5.1%) and 168 OBC (21.5%).
